Young Carers

At Burhill Primary School, we recognise that some children and young people take on caring responsibilities for a family member due to illness, disability, mental health needs, substance misuse or other circumstances at home. Whilst many young carers develop valuable qualities such as empathy, resilience and maturity, caring responsibilities can sometimes affect a child's wellbeing, attendance, readiness to learn and ability to participate fully in school life.

We are committed to identifying and supporting young carers as early as possible. We understand that caring responsibilities can often remain hidden and that children may not always recognise themselves as young carers. By fostering a culture of understanding, inclusion and belonging, we aim to create an environment where pupils feel safe to share their experiences and access support when needed.

We have high aspirations for all our pupils and are committed to removing barriers to learning so that every child can achieve their full potential. Through our nurturing and inclusive approach, we work closely with pupils, families and external agencies to understand individual circumstances and provide tailored support. This may include pastoral and emotional wellbeing support, attendance support, practical adjustments where appropriate and access to specialist services.

We recognise the importance of listening to pupils and ensuring their voices are heard. Support is regularly reviewed to ensure it continues to meet individual needs and promotes positive outcomes in attendance, engagement, wellbeing and achievement. We carefully monitor the progress and participation of young carers, helping them to access the same opportunities, experiences and enrichment activities as their peers.

We work in partnership with Surrey Young Carers, part of Action for Carers Surrey, which provides information, advice, advocacy, one-to-one support, school support and activities for young carers and their families. This partnership helps ensure that children and families receive the right support at the right time.
