Burhill Nursery
Welcome to Burhill Nursery
Our Nursery is open to children aged three before they embark on their Reception school year. We pride ourselves on providing a nurturing and welcoming start to school life, and we strive to create an environment specifically designed to meet the needs of each individual child. Our goal is to ensure that our children develop the skills to move on to school as confident, motivated learners preparing them for their Reception school year. Currently we are operating a September and January intake for those children who have reached the age of three before they start with us.
Sessions
Our Nursery offers full time (30 hours) and part time (15 hours) places. The government funds 15 hours to parents of three year old children, which is free. Full time places are offered to parents claiming thirty hours free childcare or parents who may want to fund the additional 15 hours themselves.
We offer the following sessions:
- Full time (Monday – Friday: 9am – 3pm)
- Part time Early week (Monday & Tuesday 9am – 3pm and Wednesday 9am – 12 noon)
- Part time Late week (Wednesday 12 noon – 3pm and Thursday & Friday 9am – 3pm)
Our Curriculum
Our Nursery children engage in a broad and creative curriculum designed to stimulate their curiosity and foster a love for learning. We focus on the EYFS curriculum and aim to prepare them for starting school:
PRIME AREAS
- Communication and Language We believe this is a fundamental life skill which is embedded in all aspects of school life. We aim to equip children to be able to express themselves creatively and imaginatively. We offer a rich language environment so children develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves and have the opportunity to speak and listen in a range of situations.
- Physical Development Physical development involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive and to develop their coordination, control, and movement. They must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food.
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development This area involves helping children to:
- develop a positive sense of themselves and others
- form positive relationships and develop respect for others
- develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings
- understand appropriate behaviour in groups
- develop confidence and resilience to become lifelong learners.
SPECIFIC AREAS
The prime areas are supported and strengthened by specific areas. These are:
- Literacy : Daily stories and rhyme time support children’s introduction to letters and the sounds they make. We introduce Little Wandle from Nursery to ensure our children have the best phonics start when they join Reception. Short daily inputs encourage children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write their name. Children are given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, displays and labels to ignite their interest in books and reading. Labels in the classroom enable reading with pictures as clues.
- Mathematics : Mastering number involves providing children with practical opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and applying numbers in different contexts. Open ended loose parts, sand and water support children’s understanding of shape, space and measures.
- Understanding the World This area involves guiding children to make sense of the natural world, including our Forest School, our local community and our place within it. As they learn about themselves we support their understanding of diversity through information books and celebrations. Our daily routines enable give the children a sense of order and stability, which supports their understanding of time and place. Across the curriculum, children have opportunities to use technology to enrich their learning.
- Expressive Arts and Design Expressive Arts and Design involves enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials. Music movement and drama provide opportunities to respond to what they hear. We actively promote talking so that children can effectively communicate their ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role- play, and design and technology.
The school considers the practical needs, interests and stage of development of each child in the EYFS, and uses this information to plan a challenging and enjoyable experience in all of the areas of learning and development. In planning and guiding children’s activities, staff reflect on the different ways that children learn and reflect these in practice with weekly planning meetings and interventions for those in need of additional support.
