Physical Education: Statement of Intent
At Burhill Primary School, we recognise the importance of PE and the benefits pupils gain from taking part in a form of sport and other physically demanding activities. Our curriculum provides all pupils with high quality PE and sport provision to create physically confident individuals. The promotion of a healthy lifestyle, which is supported by the application for the Healthy Schools Award, along with the importance of working together as a team and setting personal challenges helps to build character and embed values such as fairness, resilience and respect.
At Burhill, we promote a variety of sports to pupils and giving all pupils the opportunity to represent the school in a sport. Through teaching of PE, we will provide opportunities for pupils to develop their sportsmanship, focussing on respect and fairness in a competitive way. We know that the skills pupils gain in PE can be transferred to other subjects, so pupils have the tools to succeed in many areas of the curriculum.
All pupils in Key Stages 1 and 2 complete at least two hours of PE each week, which includes a class rotation in Year 4 taking swimming lessons each term. Pupils are also assessed in Year 6 in swimming 25m confidently, and are offered additional lessons to support this achievement where necessary. Pupils in Year 4 and 6 also have the opportunity to take part in Bikeability training, giving them the necessary skills to ride a bike confidently and safely.
