At Burhill Primary we work closely within the government guidelines “Development Matters”.
Within this, all areas of learning and development are connected to one another and are broken down into Prime areas and Specific areas:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Children learn best through play. The teachers in Nursery and Reception plan carefully drawing on children’s interests and knowledge whilst also matching the recommendations of “Development Matters”.
Children’s learning, progress and achievement are continually assessed by staff so that they can plan activities to match children’s individual learning needs. Teachers plan and organise the curriculum so that it progresses and is differentiated according to the child’s stage of development. Learning is active, play based, creative and includes first hand experiences indoors and outdoors. Staff believe that there is no such thing as “bad weather” – just inappropriate clothing, so we ask parents to provide suitable clothing for outdoor learning all year round. We are very proud of our two contrasting outdoor learning areas; courtyard and backyard.
In Nursery, like the rest of the school, we design a creative curriculum and learning takes place everywhere, in a most exciting way!
There are two full-time members of staff and regular student helpers and we are very happy for parents to come in and help too. During each session we encourage socialising, sharing, independence and thinking skills.
